ABOUT OSTEOPATHY:
Osteopathy is based on a the principles that the body is a unit and not one area operates on its own. Osteopaths focus on how the skeletal system, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs interact and function as a unit.
In Australia Osteopathy is a 5 year university degree that consists of a 3 year Bachelor of Clinical Science and 2 year Masters of Osteopathy. Osteopaths are registered practitioners with AHPRA and are required to complete extensive clinical professional development which keeps them up to date with the latest evidence based research. This helps Jess deliver evidence informed treatments and advice to her patients.
Osteopaths do not solely treat the painful areas but strive to investigate factors contributing to the cause of the problem.
For example if you had a problem with your knee, an Osteopath may also assess your ankle, back and pelvis as they may all be contributing to the pain or injury.
Osteopaths look globally at their patients and often include assessments to posture, muscular imbalances and lifestyle factors and how these may be affecting your symptoms.
“‘We look at the body in health as meaning perfection and harmony, not in one part, but in the whole’ ”
OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT:
Osteopathic consultations consists of a thorough history of the presenting complaint, medical history and a vigorous physical assessment.
Osteopathic treatment generally involves hands on techniques such as soft tissue techniques, gentle joint manipulation, articulation and stretching. Jess has also completed further training in Dry Needle Therapy and cupping, which she also incorporates into her osteopath treatments.
Treatments are usually aimed to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance blood flow and affect the nerve supply to tissues.
